Amazon prevents jailbreaking of Kindle Fire with their latest firmware upgrade

Kindle Fire

It is not only Apple that is not really happy because of users daring to jailbreak their devices. While it is completely legal and safe, if you know what you are doing, Apple, Amazon and other tablet and smartphone makers think they ought to control whatever is going on on your own device. Majority of jailbreak developers and users beg to disagree. It is the same case with the latest newcomer in tablet world: Amazon with their Android tablet, Kindle Fire. Amazon has previously announced that they wont encourage, nor prevent rooting of Kindle Fire, but it seems that they have changed their mind. The latest firmware update released by Amazon is apparently going against users who have already jailbroken their new tablets.

Amazon works on a Siri competitor

amazon gets yap

Amazon obviously sees Apple as a strong competitor, which isn’t that strange after all since we see Apple turning into a strong content provider with their App Store and iTunes. Amazon has obviously recognized the fact that Siri is a changing point, perhaps as much as touch screen was only a couple of years ago. And not surprisinlgy Google is also afraid of Siri, as its former CEO Eric Schmidt admits in a recent Senate hearing.

Android tablet with Amazon store, a winning combination?

mock amazon kindle fire

Amazon is according to latest rumors working on their new Android 7” tablet which was dubbed as the “Kindle Fire”. It will run on a version of Android OS but this OS version will be completely independent from Google’s current version of Android. The tablet wont be available to the public until the second week of November. Unnamed sources inside Amazon leaked the information that Amazon is working with partners outside the company on the hardware for this new tablet. Interestingly, Amazon has opted to outsource their tablet project to Quanta which was also one of the main developers working on RIM’s PlayBook tablet device instead of using their own Kindle development team. Obviously, Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos wants the Kindle team to focus on the next generation of ebook readers. Quanta
has apparently relied on experience gained while working on the PlayBook tablet.

One of the best moves Amazon will try out is the pricing of this new tablet. According to Tech Crunch, the price should be $250 for a 7” tablet. So far iPad competitors have tried to follow the prices setup by Apple but the demand by customers was very low.

Amazon working on a new tablet to compete with iPad

amazon android tablet

It seems that Amazon is working hard to make their own tablet device which could be launched in September or October of this year according to some sources. Main strength of this device could be it’s low end price, and it could be sold for “hundreds less” than the price of an iPad which is still relatively high at $499. This was a task no company could achieve so far, but Amazon is thought to be one of most serious threats to complete dominance of Apple tablets on the market. As previous history shows, Amazon was more than willing to subsidise the actual costs of their devices like the ubiquitous ebook reader Kindle in order to sell more digital content which is what Amazon at its core is: an content provider.

We have lately often heard rumors about Jeff Bezoss and his team preparing a launch of a new Android tablet. App Store trademark lawsuit: Apple Inc. v. Amazon.com Inc.

Apple's lawsuit

In a latest barrage of lawsuits and counter lawsuits Apple has taken on Amazon for alleged trademark infringement charges. Steve Jobs legal team has asked for court order banning Amazon from using the words App Store while waiting for the results of the lawsuit.

Meanwhile Amazon has claimed that App Store is only a generic term and not suitable for granting exclusive rights.
