Apple vs Samsung: Australian courts

Samsung Apple logo

Federal court in Australia has now blocked the earlier injunction against Samsung’s tablet Galaxy Tab 10.1 after South Korean company appealed on the decision to ban sales of the tablet in Australia. Apple is apparently not happy at all with this decision and will as a countermeasure appeal to the court in order to keep the injunction against the sale of Samsung’s latest tablet. To remind you, Apple is rigorously opposing Samsung on the basis that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a device modelled on Apple’s iPad 2 tablet. Because of this Apple has started a worldwide campaign including lawsuits in EU and Australia.

Siri0us app which emulated Siri on iOS devices removed from Cydia app store

Siri0us removed from Cydia

We have recently seen many interesting Siri based apps which have a great potential for revolutionizing iOS and mobile computing. One of them called Siri0us was released only a couple of days ago, but it seems that it wasn’t meant to last. Siri0us was about enabling Siri dictation on iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS, and while not as great as Siri itself it was an interesting addition especially as it helped with voice based Search and Note apps. Since it didn’t had access to official Siri servers, it had to relay completely on Nuance API. The problem was that Nuance didn’t authorize the use of their software for these purposes. And to avoid further confrontation and possible lawsuits, Eric Dean, the developer of Siri0us has decided to pull out this app from Cydia altogether.

iOS 5.1 deletes shortcuts from your Springboard

home screen icons

Apple has seeded iOS 5.1 beta only a couple of days ago and developers are busy figuring out ins and outs of this new iOS version. It seems that Apple has for some reason removed home screen shortcuts which you have perhaps added there. It seems that this small issue has attracted a lot of attention in the iOS developers community. When somebody discovered that it is possible to access device settings if you use URL type address for this, many devs tried to make use of this in a number of apps. This URL address can later be saved as a simple bookmark icon on your home screen , enabling you to adjust your device settings like Bluetooth, Wi-fi and others with one tap only.

Tethering app appears in Apple’s App Store

iTether iPhone app

Today we heard a quite interesting bit of news from the Apple Store. It appears that Apple had somehow allowed a genuine tethering app into their App Store. This app will allow you to tether your devices through your iPhone without needing to jailbreak and use some Cydia app or using the usual way of getting a tethering package from your local network carrier. We are still not sure how did this happen actually. Is this simply a mistake by Apple’s censors, or is Apple sending a message to network carriers?

iPhone 4 gets on fire during a flight

iphone fire

A passengers iPhone 4 started glowing and smoking during a airplane flight in Australian. According to a press release made by the regional airline, the iPhone started emitting smoke after the plane landed. The smoke was quite dense and it was caused by a red glow inside the device. A crew member immediately intervened and extinguished the fire before any harm happened to passengers. Luckily no one was injured during this incident, and no serious damage to the airplane has occurred. The device was iPhone 4, which means it wasn’t the latest Apple’s model iPhone 4S. The device itself has been taken to federal Transport Safety Bureau for further investigation.

Ac1dSn0w a new jailbreak solution for iOS 5 devices

Jailbreak development group known as Pwn Dev Team have just released a new jailbreak solution codenamed Ac1dSn0w. This jailbreak works for following iOS devices:
original iPad
iPod Touch 4G
iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4

One problem associated with this jailbreak solution is that it uses proprietary code owned by Apple which could and probably will cause various problems for people hosting and using the files.
Ac1dSn0w is at the moment in beta version and is available only for Mac computers. The software is developed mainly for use with Lion but it would probably work on Snow Leopard too. The jailbreak is still a tethered one and it offers other features like: exit recovery, tethered boot, Pwned DFU and more.

Jailbroken iOS 5 devices new featuring Siri dictation

Siri dictation

Using Siri becomes more and more important as we see a surge of various Siri related hack during last few days. Now the possibility of dictating with Siri while using various apps becomes possible for iOS devices other than iPhone 4S. This was made possible with a new jailbreak app named Siri0us which was just released and based on the so called Nuance Speech Recognition software. Nuance Speech Recognition is the same app Apple uses in iPhone 4S. If you decide you need to use this new jailbreak app you will have to start with a proper jailbreak for your device. Keep in mind that this app is not using Apple’s web servers at all. The whole process relies solely on the Nuance Speech Recognition which uses your devices hardware resources.

Siri controlling a TV set

Siri controlling tv

After the first Siri hack where a developer successfully controlled his thermostat with a Siri proxy and another one where car could be turned on and off, we have seen another great Siri hack. This time a user was able to control media content on his TV using the same Siri proxy hack. Siri proxy is positioned between your iPhone and Apple’s system, so it can directly receive your voice commands. You can also add additional voice commands independently from Apple.
