Cydia for newcomers

Ever heard your friends talking about Cydia, but wouldn’t dare to ask what it is all about? If your answer is yes, here is our short introduction and explanation.

Cydia is an iPhone software app which manages download and installation of your software packages outside of iTunes store. It will allow you to add repositories (places where you will find apps). Many of repos host free apps. You can easily make your own repo if you ever got that far.

Cydia will work only on jailbroken iPhones. It also includes the Cydia store where you can legally purchase apps from various developers.

Cydia

Cydia was brought by Jay Freeman aka Saurik. Cydia is an ironic allusion to the altin name of the apple worm (Cydia pomonella). You can also do some more advanced stuff with help of Cydia like for example you can save so called shsh blobs ( will try to explain the term to you soon).Shsh blobs will in a few words enable you to restore your iPhone so you can basically downgrade your firmware version.

Jailbreaking is legal according to the US court which recently decided it to be an exemption case in the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act).

Here is a useful video on Cydia. Enjoy!
