Is Apple’s Siri assistant a Google killer?
Former CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt has said in a public hearing that Siri represents a great development in search and that Google’s core business of internet search could be significantly threatened by Apple’s Siri technology. While such a statement could be dismissed as a overreaction, it is certain that Siri represents something completely new on the market. But nonetheless such a bold statement is questionable especially since Schmidt said it in front of a US Senat commission, probably to decrease the incredible significance and impact Google has over the Internet. Siri indeed could hurt Google’s business as it offers a voice assistance thus circumventing the need for visiting Google’s website with served adds which yield most of the profits for Google.
Interestingly this statement contradicts his earlier one made in 2010 where he clearly said that Facebook and Apple do not represent a competitive threat to Google. He has changed his story completely and now Google apparently is aware of the competition coming from social networks like Twitter and Facebook, specialized search engines like Amazon, Ebay and other software and hardware companies like Microsoft and Apple.
Another interesting statement by Eric Schmidt was that Google is not dominating the smartphone market with its Android OS. According to him, Android runs on 34% of devices wile iOS is running on 43% percent of Internet connected smartphones. Advantage iOS shows over Android probably comes from the fact that most of the tablets in the world are in fact iPad tablets made by Apple.
What do you think about such strong statements from Google? Is Apple really capable of toppling Google from its leading position in Internet search? Let us known your comments about this!
