ATT&T wants to know if you are tethering

We have recently written about network carriers pushing against unofficial tethering on their networks. This was as much an issue on iPhone iOS as on Android devices. On Android devices you could get tethering apps in Android Market (not available anymore) while on iOS only users who jailbreak their iPhones could tether their devices without having to paying more fees for this service. Here we will try to explain how AT&T is detecting if yo are actually tethering or not.

iPhone apps: create panorama photos with Photosynth

Did you ever want to impress your friends with some cool panoramic photos? Well if so, here is your chance. Microsoft has again surprised us with an interesting app for iPhone which is rich in features yet simple to use and easy to grasp. The name of the app is Photosynth and interestingly enough for some reason the app was launched within iOS world even before it was made available for Windows Phone 7 OS. This app is amazing and it can help you experience photography in a totally new way. It can capture a sort of 360 degree view of any space or item in a short time frame and then it stitches the images together. Afterwards you can see the stitched panorama with few swipes and enjoy seeing the image from different angles.

RedSn0w jailbreak (untethered) for iPhone running iOS 4.3.3

Here are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad with updated version of RedSn0w tool. This jailbreak is untethered!

We are happy to say that the new version of the jailbreak was just rolled out to all iPhone users and it uses the same exploit which was used in previous iOS versions (iOS 4.3.1 and 4.3.2). Please note: this jailbreak wont work for iPad 2. CDMA iPhone (Verizon) is not supported with this jailbreak tool. If you own an iPhone 4 Verizon you will need to wait for a new jailbreak software.

Jailbreak news: latest firmware upgrade iOS 4.3.3 open for untethered jailbreak!

Following the latest upgrade to iOS 4.3.3 which was seeded by Apple on Tuesday to patch the so called location tracking bug we are happy to let you know that the exploit used for untethered jailbreak is still open and usable.

A prominent member of the famous jailbreak development group the iPhone Dev Team, known as C0mex has already announced that he has successfully jailbroken the new firmware. We don’t know did he use RedSn0w or PwnageTool for jailbreaking, but until the adequate upgrade isn’t implemented in both jailbreaks, it is not recommended to experiment on your own with the jailbreaking.

iPhone jailbreak apps: stealthy iPhone tethering with PdaNet

We wrote yesterday about pressure coming from network carriers to suppress smartphone tethering in the Android Market. As you know in the iOS things are even more complicated: you are not allowed to tether unless you get a equivalent data plan with your network provider. Exception for this rules are iPhone users who have jailbroken their devices with some of the jailbreak tools available (RedSn0w, PwnageTool,Sn0wBreeze). But it seems that network carriers are trying to counter jailbreak tethering as well. So in order to prevent this a popular tethering app PdaNet is being upgraded in order to hide your unofficial data tethering.

iOS 5 comes with a new firmware upgrading system?

WWDC will most likely be the time and place where Apple will showcase the new iOS 5 and some of the rumors are predicting interesting new features like a new firmware upgrading system. Currently the usual way of upgrading the iOS is time consuming and somewhat complex especially to newbie iOS users. In order to upgrade you have to backup your device, download the new upgrade which can be an up to 600 Mb download and restore your device. It is not very convenient especially if compared with Android updates which are done over the air. Your smartphone just notifies you that a new upgrade is available and you can upgrade instantly without your computer or iTunes. Moreover you wont need to download 600Mb or more of data but instead only small, incremental patches. Apple is currently negotiating with network carriers in US, notably with Verizon in order to bring over the air upgrade to iOS users. Over the air upgrades could certainly simplify firmware upgrading and improve overall user experience.
