PowderMonkeys, a new iOS game for younger gamers

PowderMonekys is a new game released by XMG Studio compatible with iPad and iPhone and aimed mostly at the younger players. It features a great design, plenty of missions, favourable game mechanics which all combined provide a great gaming experience for the youngsters but also for older generations of players. Sail the high seas, solve mysteries, fight a noble fight with monkey pirates against invading giant bugs? Count us in!

Historically speaking a powder monkey were really crew members of warships and pirate ships alike. Their primary task was to deliver ammunition and gunpowder to cannon crews during navy battles. In this game powder monkeys became real sailor monkeys fighting their battles against evil looking giant bugs. Your goal is to help powder monkeys to complete quests, win battles, upgrade their weaponry and much more. Here is how the games looks like. While your shipmates and you sail around on a mission, a large wooden ship wheel will appear on the screen, but you will only need to drag it to move your ship. When you find yourself in a quest you will see arrows showing you the right directions.

You will also note other elements on the screen including the badge for the store where you can purchase additional items and a log of your quests. Instead of focusing solely on shooting things which gets boring quickly Powder Monkeys also include other tasks and skills like trading, traveling, puzzle solving mysteries, resource management and so on.

The game begins with you and your shipmates sailing on your first voyage. But be prepared, as your arch enemies the big bad bugs are only waiting a chance to attack you! So your first battle begins when two ships near each other side by side. Every ship has 4 cannons and different types of projectiles for them. Your ammunition varries and you can shoot darts, watermelons and even cutlery as the legend says that old pirates used this when left without ammunition. After receiving heavy artillery fire, your health point will decrease and whichever team loses its health points faster will lose the battle. To counter this problem there are various energy points which will help you pump your health points up.

You can even get some special weaponry which will put up a defensive shield around your ship, or increase the damage level you inflict with your cannons. This will be extremely important if the enemy vessel proves to be superior in a classical battle. After you hopefully defeat the evil bugs you will get some coins thrown at you. Every successfully finished mission will also earn you some golden coins.

You can use the coins to purchase better ammo, upgrade your ship defences or your weapons. You can also purchase upgrades through in app purchases. All in all, Powder Monkeys is a great game for younger but also for somewhat more mature gamers. Another great point of this app is that it is really cheap as its app store price is $0.99 and you wouldn’t expect such a nice game for such a great price. But be warned as you can quickly become tempted to improve your ship through the in app purchase store therefore increasing your costs quickly. Powder Monkeys in our opinion is definitely a nice game to play and share with your kids. Do you agree?
