iOS 5 jailbreak now available as a semi tethered solution

Semi tethered jailbreak for iOS 5

If you are a frequent visitor to our blog you will be aware of the fact that iOS 5 jailbreak with RedSn0w or Sn0wbreeze is still a tethered jailbreak, which means that you’ll need to have access to a computer with the jailbreak tool whenever you want to start up your iPhone. While this isn’t a big deal when you are at home, it can become fairly problematic if you travel abroad without access to your usual equipment. And while we have heard many rumors about jailbreak dev community working on the tethered jailbreak for iOS 5, so far this hasn’t become available. Luckily now we have at least a part of the solution. BigBoss has released a semi tethered jailbreak hack for all jailbreakers which really need it. Please note: this is a very limited version of the jailbreak, as it allows you to semi tether without the need to use your computer, but on the down side almost none of the jailbreak apps or tweaks will work after you install this.

Here is what happens after you install this semi tethered jailbreak:

Voice calling and messaging will work.
Apps from the app store work as usually.
Other browsers from app store will work (Atomic for example).
Mobile Safari wont work.
Native mail app is not working.
Cydia apps aren’t working until you boot tethered again.
Do not try to add SBSettings or similar until you boot tethered as it will put your iPhone into respring looping cycle.

iOS Devices which are supported with this semi tethered solution:

iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4
iPad
iPod Touch 3G and 4G

Instructions on how to get semi tethered jailbreak on your device:

Upgrade to iOS 5 if you already didn’t do so and follow up with a tethered jailbreak with RedSn0w for Mac or Windows. You can find instructions here.

After you successfully jailbreak your iPhone or other iOS device tap on Cydia and choose Manage.

To add a new source tap Sources

When in sources, simply tap Edit which is located in upper right hand side of the screen. Choose Add to add a new source.

It will prompt you for the URL of your new source. Add BigBoss repository: http://thebigboss.org/semitether
Note: type this URL carefully, as even one sign mistake will prevent this from working.

Please wait until Cydia downloads the requested data. Go back to Cydia and search for SemiTether in the search bar.
When found install it and reboot your iPhone. You are now able to reboot your iPhone without RedSn0w!

To get back all your jailbreak apps and tweaks simply boot up with RedSn0w as usual. Plug your iPhone to your computer, launch RedSn0w jailbreak and select only the “Just boot” option. Your iPhone is now functional and all your jailbreak apps and tweaks are fully functional. That is it, you have a semi tethered jailbreak and you can travel without the need to boot up with RedSn0w whenever your iPhone battery has drained out. While certainly not the best possible option, it still represents a step forward to a full untethered jailbreak.
