iOS 5 jailbreak for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPad with RedSn0w 0.9.9 b 5

After long and hard work, jailbreak community has successfully developed a new and stable jailbreak for all iOS users. Tethered jailbreak for iOS 5 is available so soon after the release of the new iOS 5 because every testing version of iOS 5 beta was quickly followed by a new version of the jailbreak. So if you plan to upgrade your device or purchase a new one which will come with iOS 5 pre installed, rest assure: you will be able to jailbreak your device and enjoy a large number of tweaks and jailbreak apps on your device.

There will probably be a number of iPhone and iPad users questioning the need for jailbreaking as Apple has gone a long way to improve almost every possible aspect of iOS. Some people would even wrongly presume that jailbreaking only benefits software piracy. So if not for using pirated apps why should one jailbreak given the fact that Apple has already made all aspects of iOS more or less perfect?

A short answer to this questions and doubts is that while Apple has done a great job with iOS 5 there are still a number of options which won’t become available with official iOS version. Some of the new features of RedSn0w 0.9.9 b 5

URL’s for IPSW firmware files are now included (users wont have to add files manually).
RedSn0w gets some PwnageTools specific options (custom firmware creation without modem firmware update). This will work for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 only at this moment.

RedSn0w 0.9.9b5 works only on Mac computers, as the Windows version is still in the development version.

UltraSn0w is being also updated to support this version of the jailbreak

Please note: RedSn0w 0.9.9b5 will not work on iPhone 4S or iPad 2 and it is tethered only (you need to plug your device into your Mac and choose to boot tethered.

RedSn0w 0.9.9b5 jailbreak instructions

1. You need to update your iTunes version before you can proceed. Latest iTunes version is iTunes 10.5 and is available for both Mac and Windows computers. As a measure of precaution, backup all data on your iPhone before you continue.

2. Download RedSn0w 0.9.9 b 5 here. Only Mac version is available at the moment but Windows version should also be available soon.

3. Point and click on the “Jailbreak” button. Follow by choosing: “install Cydia” and as always you will need to DFU your device. When the iPhone is in DFU mode (if you have done it properly iPhone screen will be completely black), RedSn0w will start jailbreaking the device. Wait until RedSn0w finishes the process. The software will download all required files from Apple’s own servers.

4. After the jailbreak is done you will have to boot the device as the jailbreak is tethered only. To do this connect your iPhone start RedSn0w and select the “Just boot” option. Your iPhone is jailbroken and you can start using all those cool jailbreak apps and tweaks.

If you need to carrier unlock your device with the Gevey sim unlock card or with UltraSn0w unlock, don’t update through iTunes! Instead, use RedSnow 0.9.9b5 to make a custom firmware version which wont upgrade the baseband version on your device. To get yourself a custom firmware start RedSn0w and choose the “Extras” option. Among offered select only “Custom IPSW”. Choose the needed iOS 5 firmware file and wait until RedSn0w creates the custom file.

Put your device into DFU mode by clicking on “Pwned DFU” which is another option available in the “Extras” area.

You can now restore your iPhone with the prepared custom firmware file. Restore as usually with iTunes, but again be careful to restore with the custom firmware NOT with the official iOS firmware. You can now insert your Gevey Sim unlock card or use UtraSn0w to unlock your iPhone.
