New IMEI based unlock for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS?

Apparently something new is going on in the iPhone world. We are hearing from many different sources that some new kind of unlock is now available to iPhone users. It is supposedly a remote based unlock which works through your IMEI ( International Mobile Equipment Identity). IMEI is a number which is unique for your handset and is used by your network carrier to identify your iPhone as a valid device. It can also be used to blacklist the device if it gets stolen.

So far most of these reports have not been confirmed as safe. As you all know there are many fake websites selling ineffective and false unlock solutions and services.

Anyway here is the story. You have to give around $170 for the unlock and send them your iPhone’s IMEI. To find out your iPhone’s IMEI start iTunes, connect your iPhone and choose “Summary Tab”. Now just click on “Phone number” and it will show you your iPhone’s IMEI.

After a day or two, they will reply to you with an email claiming that your iPhone is unlocked. Plug your iPhone into iTunes, sync it and you can insert your sim card. And that is all! Your iPhone should be unlocked without any code, software or unlock sim card. This works only for GSM iPhones (AT&T) and iPad owners are out of luck as it wont work for them. While $170 is not a small amount of cash, to have an iPhone unlocked without the need to worry about updates, unlocks, basebands and other trivialities will probably sound as a great offer to many users.
Seriously, this unlock looks quite like a factory unlock to us.

But how is this possible?

Apple has a large database which is queried whenever you sync your iPhone with iTunes, in order to verify the status of your iPhone. The process is same as when you contact your carrier to unlock your iPhone. You call them and they unlock it for you. Afterwards you just need to sync it with itunes and your iPhone becomes fully unlocked.

It seems that the source of this unlock is someone who has access to Apple’s database and it seems that this source is simply selling the access to this database. So far it is not clear is this legitimate or not, but it seems that once you unlock your iPhone with this method it stays permanently unlocked.

So if you are an iPhone owner who is stuck with an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 which cant be unlocked with other methods like UltraSn0w, you will probably be happy about this. We have to say we didn’t verify this personally but some reputable online sources have confirmed that they have tested this and it worked for them.

As always, please be careful where you purchase this service if you decide to do so. At any cost (pun intended) avoid shady deals on ebay or some sneaky websites without a verifiable address or contact phone.

Stay tuned and we will update you as soon as we have news about this unlock.
