Secret weapon: iPad 2
Singaporean Army plans to equip all new recruits with Apple’s latest model of iPad 2 tablet. According to Indian Times, Headquarters of Singaporean Armed Forces will include iPad 2 into standard equipment of every new soldier. Singaporean Department of Defence expect this move to be well received by well educated and technologically educated young soldiers.
It is not quite clear what exact purpose will iPad 2 have within such environment. But there are some possible ways to use iPad tablets as an learning and communications tool. For example soldiers could use high resolution cameras which are available on iPad to take pictures or videos of their location which could later be analysed from combat standpoints, its live connection could be used for video conferencing or instant messaging, or it could be used to simply access Singaporean Army’s online portal Learn Net. Of course iPad can always be used for relaxation and entertainment, like for games or streaming movies perhaps.
Who knows maybe SAF strategist have some special idea on mind, or maybe they just want to be technologically most advanced and equipped armed forces in the world? Whatever the answer, new recruits coming into uniform this fall will be able to enjoy all the advantages and capabilities of Apple’s iPad. Minister of Defence of the tiny city state stated that this is one of the ways to engage and motivate city’s well educated youth to take part in their patriotic duties.
Cynics would say that the main reason for this move is to encourage younger generations to enter armed forces, but in this case this wouldn’t be true. In Singapore military service is mandatory. Except this time it young recruits could hone their skills with iPads. Perhaps there is an app for that already?
