iPhone to TV: how to connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod to your TV
Did you ever wonder about connecting your iDevice to your TV? Apple has made this possible for standard TV as well as for high definition television sets. You can do this with the cables or even better through Wi-Fi connection.
Please keep in mind that different TV sets have different kind of ports and this will determine how will you connect them to your iPhone, iPod or iPad.
Cable connection:
There are four different adapters compatible with your TV:
For standard definition television set you will probably have a composite adapter. Such a adapters have a dock port on your device, an USB cord and on the other end RCA plug for sound and video. This kind of adapter is supported only by video apps (for example: AirVideo).
More advanced televisions that still use analog technology but offer higher definitions work with Component adapters. Such adapters use the dock port on your iDevice, USB cable for power and syncing and RCA ports on the other end of the cable for sound and video. Unfortunately only video apps like AirPlay will work with this kind of connection.
VGA adapters are needed for those of you who still own their old fashioned TVs which works on VGA standards. This kind of adapter consist of a docking port for your iPhone (or iPod and iPad) on one end, of USB cord and VGA plug on the other end which you will need to connect to the TV. This will only work again for video apps only like AirPlay.
It gets more modern and better with HDMI adapters. HDMI adapter is a new product coming from Apple and it will support highest television standards all the way up to 1080 p. Apple’s HDMI has a dock port on the end you connect to your iPhone or iPad and a HDMI port on the end that goes into your big screen. With the new iPad2 this HDMI adapter will support everything including apps so everything you see on your iPhone screen will be visible on your TV also. Unfortunately on older devices like iPhone 4 only video apps will work.
