Amazon working on a new tablet?

Kindle tablet

When asked by an reporter from Consumer Reports if Amazon is developing a new tablet different from their worldwide successful ebook reader Kindle, Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos has answered without hesitation that customers should stay tuned to new developments coming from Amazon. This is quite unexpected for someone like Jeff Bezos who is as tight with his promises and speculations as Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs is with his hints on new Apple wonders. Recently a lot of online rumors are mentioning Amazon’s plans for expanding their Kindle line of devices. Earlier this year Amazon has offered job opening for programmers targeting mostly developers with impressive Android background. While the details of Amazon’s plans are not known, it seems that most of the pointers indicate that Amazon wants to develop some kind of Kindle tablet running Android OS.

While Apple is boosting its public image by sharing their sales figures for iPhone and iPad, Amazon isn’t playing the same game. So far they haven’t publicly shared their sales number for the Kindle ebook reader, but most analysts agree that the number of sold Kindle devices is around 6 to 8 million units.

Kindle has proved itself as a top notch ebook reader, considered by many as better tool for reading ebboks than the mighty iPad itself. An improved Kindle, running Android OS which is backed up with Amazon content and cloud services could potentially become a strong iPad challenger. This tablet could also be used as a future market for publishers of top quality magazines and other rich content publications in the same way as recently started to happen on the iPad.

We think that if Apple becomes a sole publishing venue for newspapers and magazines, this wouldn’t reflect well on the freedom of choice and even freedom of press. Other strong publishing platforms could be an welcome addition to the market. We can only hope that tablets world will become more diversified with Amazon’s new tablet. But could it be better than iPad 2? We sincerely doubt so, as even the original iPad has no good enough competitor so far.

What is your stake on this? Would you get another tablet beside iPad or iPad 2?
