SHSH blobs, how and why should you save them

You will often hear iPhone users, especially those who are interested in jailbreak and unlock to talk about something strangely named: “ SHSH blobs”. What is that ? No you don’t need to worry, you don’t have to be a programmer to use this for your advantage.

SHSH blob is a special kind of file which is unique for every iPhone. This file is verified on Apple’s servers and is kind of a proof that your iPhone is on the most recent firmware version. This is a way for Apple to prevent you using older firmware version. If you want to restore your iPhone to its for example iOS 3.1.3 which you prefer because it can be unlocked, Apple wont allow it because they don’t want you to use an unlocked iPhone. You will be able to restore it only if you have saved the SHSH blobs. Luckily for us there is a way. Technically speaking we are sending the request to another server which will send back a SHSH blob (but only if you have previously saved it)to iTunes, tricking it that the firmware is updated.

This works for all iOS version including: iPhone (3G, 3GS and iPhone 4), iPod touch and iPad.

Unfortunately you can save only the SHSH blobs on your current version, you cant save SHSH blobs for your previous iOS versions. This means that if you are on 4.2.1 and didn’t save SHSH on your previous versions there is no going back to 4.0 and earlier iOS versions, sorry.

It is quite important to know did you save or did someone else save the SHSH blobs on your iPhone. To see this you must have a jailbroken iPhone. If this is so, please tap Cydia and you will see in the app whether you have saved SHSH blobs and for which firmware version exactly.

Note: SHSH is unique for every iPhone, this means that you cant use SHSH of another iPhone.

If you didn’t save your iPhones SHSH, hurry and do it immediately! Tap Cydia and tap “Make my life easier”. Wait patiently until it gives you the message “This device has SHSH on file for your iPhone OS”. Be careful, those servers are sometimes overburdened especially in times when Apple is upgrading the iOS, so wait until you are sure everything is OK.

Trust me, saving SHSH blobs will make your life easier!
