Recently the tech freedom activists behind Electronic Frontier Foundation asked for help in the fight for keeping jailbreaking a legal act. People from EFF wanted their supporters to leave comments on the website of US Copyright office in support of jailbreaking. The comments section on their website was shut down ten days ago, and following this, Copyright office shared the posted comments online. There were only 700 recorded posts made, but some real big names in the iOS jailbreak world were adding their weight to this fight. One of those important figures from the jailbreak community was the famous Saurik, owner and maintainer of Cydia, the unofficial app store for iOS. Jay Freeman, which is the real name of Saurik, added more than 5 pages of his thoughts and facts on why the jailbreaking is legal and why it needs to stay legal in the future.

Among other reasons he wrote that many developers were not satisfied with the imposed artificial limitations, thus they have taken on the task of escaping from the jail (aka jailbreaking)! The tools they developed for this process have later become known as jailbreak tools like RedSn0w, Sn0wBreeze, PwnageTools etc. The main function of these tools was to install third party apps and tweaks on jailbroken devices. The jailbreaks were based on different processes, depending on the approach used by developers. Some of these were rooting, bootloader based jailbreaks and a number of other processes. The jailbreak is generally speaking easy and safe if you know what you are doing, but the various approaches and ensuing results are somewhat different. Some actions after the jailbreak were more or less difficult, so for example it isn’t as easy to upgrade the device firmware after the jailbreak without removing the jailbreak completely. Of course: you can upgrade the device but you need to use the so called custom firmware upgrade option. This involves a process where you use the jailbreak tool to create a custom firmware which is afterwards loaded onto the device.

Saurik’s whole comment is an interesting read, and you can check it out in its whole length on the US Copyright office website. Two years ago, US courts ruled out that jailbreaking is indeed legal, but the decision could expire this year. If for some unknown reason the Copyright office does not confirm the legality of jailbreaking, the decision could again become used against people deciding to jailbreak their own devices.

We have just seen the image of the next iPad model, which should apparently feature a high quality 8 megapixel camera, among other improvements. This image has been posted on a Chinese Apple portal, even before the device was official announced. This is the first image made available to the public, but according to the image, it is really in line with what was predicted by many analysts in earlier rumors about the device.

The case of the device is not much different from what we have already seen with iPad 2, although it is obvious that it has been redesigned with smoother edges. The device will use a 9,7” Retina Display. This was confirmed a couple of days before the image leaked to the blogosphere. We expect Apple to reveal the device officially on  the March press conference. This new tablet will be powered by Apples latest technology, including the new Apple A6 processor. It will also contain 4G LTE compatible communication technology.

One of the most valued advantages of iPhone 4S is certainly it’s Siri voice control app. Since iPhone 4S is now a jailbreak friendly device thanks to hard work from the jailbreak community, many different Siri related tweaks are becoming available. Among them, a number of apps which are Siri like or enable Siri on iOS devices other than iPhone 4S have been released recently. So far the most popular alternative to Siri is being delivered through Spire. But Sara is a tweak which will enable Siri even on older iOS devices. Yes it is true, it will work even on iPhone 3G!

Sara was developed, believe it or not, by group of Vietnamese developers, and it is actually a voice recognition tool which allows users to exploit capabilities similar to Siri on their devices. You can use Sara for Youtube voice search, web search, translation and much more. What is really nice with this tool is that it can be used outside of US. It offers support for 35different languages. Keep in mind that while it looks quite cool, it is still not as good as Siri. For example, location based actions wont work at all. There are also other functions which wont work like alarm, clock and other. Still this app is a free one and it will probably get better with each new version. Apple has recently released data on new profiles for different network carriers which apparently reveals the date of the new iOS upgrade. The released files include a hint of the date for releasing iOS 5.1.

According to this data some analysts predict that the upgrade will be available for all iOS devices including iPhone iPad and iPod Touch. The above mentioned profiles are supplied for iPhone operators in several countries including those in Greece, Japan, France, Sweden and others. These profiles will enable network connectivity after each device becomes updated to the new iOS version. The release of the next iOS could also be accompanied with the announcement of the iPad 3 which could be showcased next month already. Samsung is once more targeting Apple with a new commercial. This time they have used the main event of the season: the Super Bowl. The interesting thing with this video, besides its wannabe funny tone, is that it is completely anti Apple oriented. It once again mocks Apple fan culture, with people standing in line in front of an Apple store before the big game starts.

According to the add, Samsung’s new model “did it again”. A new model with a stylus? That sounds, umm, kind of weird.

We seriously doubt this cant of marketing can dent a significant hole in Apple’s devoted user base. Still the add is funny. You can see it for yourself in the Youtube video bellow, that is if you are among the rare people which haven’t already seen it during the big game.

here is another interesting jailbreak tweak. This time it is all about ringtone customization. While this certainly isn’t something new, and you don’t need to jailbreak to customize your ringtone, it is still easier and more interesting if you do it on a jailbroken device with a tweak just like AnyRing.

The famous but lately troubled search engine company, has decided to invest more time into the iOS part of the internet search market segment. This could be deemed as a quite reasonable decision by their management, given the stellar growth of usage of iOS products around the world. If you follow our blog, you will probably know that it was recently announced that Apple is now the biggest computer supplier in the world.

This new Yahoo portal is allowing users to search for their favorite iOS apps. Apparently Android apps are also included. You can search also by browsing through categories. You will easy find out the ratings of different apps which will make it easier for users to find better apps.

We have seen many cool tweaks for jailbroken iPhones so far, including those which can choose the text with the name of your network carrier into anything you choose. This is already a quite usual thing among users with jailbroken iOS devices. But now there is even a more interesting option available on the market. Zeppelin jailbreak tweak will easily change even the logo of your carrier network. When you download and install this nice little tweak, you will see a whole new panel with a couple of new options in your Settings app.  You will be able to chose among any of available logos. We’ll mention just a couple of them just to let you feel how it would look like on your iPhone.

Another upgrade to the famous jailrbeak app RedSN0w has just been seeded. Developers of this useful tool, the super stars of jailbreaking, iPhone Dev Team have once more updated this application. This time they have solved another troubling issue: iBooks. The issue was created with the help from PlanetBeing, another individual jailbreak developer.

This fix contains a solution for the iBooks, but now it includes the so called DRM options. The solution comes in a form of a software utility named ‘Crazeles’, developed and released by @PlanetBeing. ‘Crazeles’ avoids anti jailbreak scanning, which is executed by the iBooks app. If the scanning is done, a number of your books could become useless. ‘Crazeles’ is working in a similar vein as the ‘Hunny pot’ solution which was developed previously by @Comex.

To get this fix you can re jailbreak your device with this version of RedSn0w, just keep in mind to untick the option ‘Install Cydia‘ when jailbreaking, as installing Cydia twice can cause different problems with the jailbreak. You can download RedSn0w for Windows here and Mac version here.
