Apple has banned Carrier IQ from iOS 5

data privacy iOS

After recently published finding by a security consultant Trevor Eckhart, which said  that Carrier IQ acts or can act as a rootkit, Apple has issued a statement regrading this issue. Cupertino company states that they have stopped supporting this software with the new iOS 5, and they want to completely remove it from iOS in the next upgrade of the firmware. Apple is not a company which would gather any private data from their users. In fact to get access to any information, you need to allow it personally within iOS settings, and if you agree to share your data, those informations are not personal. Apple has never and will never use keylogging apps of any kind. All data sent from your iPhone or iPad is encrypted and completely anonymous.

Recent findings about the IQ keylogger has attracted a great deal of negative publicity and now even some politicians like Senator Al Franken are demanding explanations about the nature of informations gathered by Carrier IQ. Honestly said, the fact that so many informations could be tracked about millions of smartphone users in US is really disturbing. Even more, if the rootkit can really gain access to any of your private data on your iPhone or Android device, the things are becoming even worse. Senator Franken has demanded that Congress reacts swiftly and protect the privacy of US citizens.

The good news is that while Carrier IQ was active on iOS it wasn’t as malicious as on Android devices. Another plus for Apple is that thy didn’t waste time and quickly announced that they will block Carrier IQ from further versions of iOS.
